Open the tool: Muse Interactive Tomato Planting Guide. For the full guide, read When to Plant Tomatoes by USDA Zone (and When It's Too Late).

New to tomato timing? Read the full guide: When to Plant Tomatoes by USDA Zone (and When It's Too Late). This finder turns your frost dates and your variety into indoor start, transplant, and last safe planting dates.

Enter your last spring frost date, your first fall frost date, and days to maturity for your variety. You get a start indoors window, a transplant window, and a latest transplant date with a harvest cushion, plus a plain verdict on whether you still have time. It is free, it needs no account, and it saves nothing.

How to use this tool

Primary action: choose Update schedule.

Result views: Timeline · Calendar.

  1. Enter your last spring frost date and your first fall frost date, from a local source, not just your zone.
  2. Enter days to maturity from transplanting, from your seed packet or variety listing. Use 50 to 120 days.
  3. Choose seeds indoors or bought transplants, so the start date step fits your plan.
  4. Read the latest transplant date before you buy plants, especially if you are planting late.
  5. Then harden off seedlings over about a week before you transplant.

What your result means

The transplant window starts after frost danger, when nights stay above 50 degrees Fahrenheit and soil is about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The latest transplant date is your first fall frost, minus days to maturity, minus a four week harvest cushion. That cushion is a planning allowance, not a guarantee, and it gives you more chance to harvest before cold ends production. For the zone windows and the worked examples, see When to Plant Tomatoes by USDA Zone (and When It's Too Late).

A plant that produces its first ripe tomato just before frost has technically matured, but may deliver very little usable harvest. That is why the verdict says tight, not just possible, when the latest date is close.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account?

No. This finder is free and needs no sign-up.

Is my data saved?

No. Your frost dates and variety are not saved.

What if my variety lists days from sowing, not transplanting?

Subtract about 6 to 8 weeks for indoor growing, then use the remaining days as days from transplanting. If you are unsure, use the longer number, so the latest date stays conservative.

Can I plant tomatoes in hot climates in summer?

Not always. In hot climates, summer heat can be the cutoff, because large fruited tomatoes may flower but stop setting fruit when nights stay very warm. A spring and fall crop may work better than planting into peak summer heat.
