50/30/20 vs Zero-Based Budget Simulator

Open the tool: Budget Check. For the full guide, read How to Make a Budget That Actually Sticks.

Enter your monthly after-tax income and spending once. The simulator scores the same numbers two ways: against the 50/30/20 rule, and as a zero-based budget where every dollar gets a job. Then it projects your savings and debt, and shows what cutting wants or refinancing debt would change. Everything recalculates as you type. It is free, needs no account, and stays in this browser.

This is general education, not personalized financial advice.

How to use this tool

  1. Start from a preset, or type your own after-tax pay and bills.
  2. Read needs, wants, and savings against 50/30/20, and left-to-assign for zero-based.
  3. Open Try an adjustment to cut wants or test a refinance.
  4. Check the savings and debt trajectory across the plans.

What your result means

Left to assign is not extra spending until you give it a job. Zero-based means that number is $0 because every dollar is already in needs, wants, or savings. The 50/30/20 lines are targets, not a grade. A refinance scenario only changes the payment on the numbers you enter. It is not an offer.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account?

No. Amounts stay in this browser. They are not sent to a server.

Is minimum debt payment a need?

Yes in this check. Extra payments above the minimum count as savings or as an adjustment toward debt.

Does a refinance always lower the payment?

Only on the numbers you enter. The fee rolls into the balance, then the new monthly payment is calculated. It is not an offer.
